The Story of Eastover Nut Farm

The Story of Eastover Nut Farm

Nestled amidst the rolling hills of South Carolina, Eastover Nut Farm isn't your typical agricultural story. It's a testament to the power of passion, a love for adventure, and a second act fueled by a desire to preserve a vanishing piece of American history.

Trading City Lights for Starlight:

IBack in 2007, Jan, a dedicated teacher, and Michael, the mind behind Southwest Airlines' original flight route program, made a life-altering decision. Leaving behind the bustle of city life, they packed their bags, their two young sons, and a dream. Their destination: a rural haven in Eastover, SC, where they would embark on a new adventure - preserving the American chestnut.

Planting the Seeds of a Legacy:

Neither Jan nor Michael were farmers by trade. Yet, their hearts held a deep respect for the land and a fascination with the story of the American chestnut, a once-dominant tree nearly wiped out by a devastating blight in the early 20th century. It was here, on their newly acquired land, that their journey with preserving this legacy began.

Beyond the Chestnuts:

With the innocence of newcomers and the enthusiasm of a family embarking on a shared adventure, they planted roughly 100 chestnut trees. The farm flourished under their care. Vegetables sprouted, flowers bloomed, and bees buzzed happily alongside their loyal canine companions. But Michael, a man brimming with creativity, wasn't satisfied with just growing these remarkable nuts.

A Mind That Never Rested:

Michael, with his inherent creativity, wasn't content to simply grow chestnuts. His mind, a programmer's playground, saw endless possibilities. He experimented, turning these precious nuts into culinary delights: chestnut purée, infused honey, even chestnut beers and liquors. Every creation was a testament to his love for food, nature, and the joy of exploration.

Memories Woven in Time:

These stories, fragments of memories cherished by the family, paint a portrait of the man Michael was. He was a lover of music, his spirit lifted by beautiful melodies. Nature was his sanctuary, and poetry flowed from his mind, capturing the essence of their rural haven. Above all, Michael was known for his generosity, his heart as vast as the South Carolina sky.

A Legacy That Lives On:

Tragically, in March 2023, Michael passed away, leaving a void that can never be filled. Yet, his spirit lives on in the rustling leaves of the chestnut trees, the vibrant life that thrives on the farm, and the countless creations he left behind. Jan, along with their first son who had left his own path, find purpose in continuing his legacy.

The farm remains a testament to their collective dream – a testament to the power of leaving the known behind, embracing the unknown, and dedicating yourselves to a cause greater than yourselves.

Eastover Nut Farm is a testament to the power of family, the courage to chase dreams, and the unwavering love for a disappearing legacy.

This is just the beginning of Eastover Nut Farm's story. As we move forward, we'll share more about the farm's journey of preserving the American chestnut, and the love that continues to nourish this special place.
